San Andres B.
“Watching Josefino “Chino” Toledo’s “San Andres B.” was quite an education. It required viewers to forget the conventional tunesmiths of opera and allow themselves a complete immersion in contemporary sound.”
Pablo A. Tariman. Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The triumph of contemporary sound in Chino Toledo’s ‘San Andres B.’
a filipino opera in 2 acts
“SAN ANDRES B is not a biographical sketch of Andres Bonifacio nor does it attempt to present the historical events leading to the 1896 Revolution. This is a look at how a nation transformed and evolved after the events of the 19th c. The life of Andres Bonifacio was just one of the means in which the heightened level of the Filipino’s personal and national consciousness from the time of the Propaganda until the establishment of the Katipunan could be presented. He came to be the embodiment of the Filipino consciousness.” (Christine de Vera)
“National Artist Virgilio Almario, librettist of SAN ANDRES B is presenting a new inspired look into the human psyche of Bonifacio-his sense of heroism that had its roots from his deep love for his family, his folk community and its unique cultural traditions, faith and beliefs, and from his sensitivity and his in-born, natural, heroic, unwavering stand and defense of the basic human rights, justice and freedom of every human being, therefore, of every Filipino. Almario aims to rekindle our contemporary society's love of our country, our people and our culture. For this noble aim of Almario, who is best to complement his intentions but, another artist whose passion for discovering and enhancing what is Filipino in us and our culture, is as burning as the National Artist's-Professor Chino Toledo, a consummate Filipino musical artist. Professor Toledo's compositions for SAN ANDRES B are born out of the same heroic passion to define and express through the art of music what it means to be a Filipino. He will challenge and provoke you to allow his music to touch the strings of your Filipino heart and soul.” (Nanding Josef, Artistic Director - Tanghalang Pilipino)
“The music by Maestro Chino Toledo is unapologetically new, mixing both sung lyrics and recitative embedded within melodic lines that are fierce, jagged, and challenging.” (Floy Quintos, Director)
